“Hey uhh… I guess you’re busy or something.”

Dialing a phone number off a business card or web page feels like an augury. Every time, I have to steel my will, place my faith in the unknown and dial into the void. Is it a personal number, or will I get a robot with a slow voice and a series of confusing and incomprehensable menu options? Wait, do I need to press 2 or 3? Do I leave a voicemail after one attempted call, or two?

Who is listening on the other end?

Do they hear the uncertainty in my voice?

Did I even reach the right person?

Who do I know in Minneapolis? I don’t remember applying for anything there...
